Mary Victoria - Guest Blog on writing Samiha's Song

The wonderful Mary Victoria has written us a blog post on what it was like to write Chronicles of the Tree #2 'Samiha's Song'. This is a must read series if you like fantasy.
I know I will be getting my hands on a copy!
Tymon leaves his new home and his beloved Samiha to complete his Grafting studies with the famous Oracle of Nur. But Tymon and fellow traveller Jedda find that locating the Oracle in a corrupt and lawless city run by pirates and slave-drivers is no easy matter.
Samiha′s fate has been predicted by Grafters down the ages. When she is captured in Cherk Harbour and charged with grand heresy, there seems to be no way out ... but Tymon does not believe in fate and is desperate to save her lift.
As chaos hums through the Tree, survival revolves on the fate of just one ...

The experience of writing ‘Samiha's Song’ was quite different to that of writing ‘Tymon's Flight’. Of course, ‘Samiha’ is a direct sequel to the first book, basically a continuation of the same story, with the main action beginning barely two weeks after the end of the events described in ‘Tymon's Flight’. So I started writing with a firm idea of where I had been before, and a far firmer notion of where I was going as a result! In that sense, the second book was easier to write than the first.

I also began 'Samiha's Song' with a contract in hand from HarperCollins and, for the first time in my life, a deadline for completing a working draft. So I knew I had to be efficient. I gave myself about nine months to write the book; it actually needed ten, in the end, but in any case my writing time was reduced compared to what it had been on ‘Tymon's Flight’.

That did not turn out to be as much of a problem as I had feared, initially. Partly this was because my own grasp of the craft of writing had improved since I began the first book. I did not waste time on drafts that never saw the light of day, or muddle around adding pivotal story points that required me to unpick an entire MS in order to insert elements after the book was done. Most importantly, I made the decision, before I even began thinking about ‘Samiha's Song’, to use that wondrous thing, a chapter outline.

Praise be to the chapter outline! I finally knew where I was going. My approach was not to stick slavishly to what I had outlined, but to use my plot summary as signposts along the way. If in the course of writing I found a better way of telling the story, I changed that element of the outline. But I had an overall map for my journey, and that map was essential in helping me to complete a sound first draft in the space of ten months.

I loved writing ‘Samiha's Song’. The story deals with issues that are very close to my heart, and I wrote passionately, with enjoyment. I particularly enjoyed introducing the character of Jedda, who is a complex soul and a great deal of fun to write. And of course it was immensely satisfying to explore Samiha herself in more depth, and to begin to understand the mystery lying at the heart of her.

I hope you enjoy reading this story as much as I did writing it.

So many great authors are guests, so keep an eye out for it! Also included in our copies of Samiha Song are signed bookplates so everyone can have a signed copy for their book.

Mary Victoria was born in 1973 in Turners Falls, Massachusetts. Despite this she managed to live most of her life in other places, including Cyprus, Canada, Sierra Leone, France and the UK. She studied art and film and worked as an animator before turning to full time writing. She now lives in Wellington, New Zealand with her husband and daughter.

 FREAK.
That's what her classmates call seventeen-year-old Donna Underwood. When she was seven, a horrific fey attack killed her father and drove her mother mad. The child of alchemists, Donna feels cursed by the magical heritage that destroyed her parents and any chance she had for a normal life. The only

When the vicious wood elves - the darkest outcasts of Faerie - abduct Navin, Donna finally has to accept her role in the centuries-old war between the humans and the fey. Assisted by Xan, a gorgeous half-fey dropout with secrets of his own, Donna races to save her friend - even if it means betraying everything her parents fought to protect.

It's a brave new world. 'My name is Kyle Straker. And I don't exist anymore.' So begins the story of Kyle Straker, recorded on to old audio tapes. You might think these tapes are a hoax. But perhaps they contain the history of a past world...If what the tapes say are true, it means that everything we think we know is a lie. And if everything we know is a lie does that mean that we are, too?

Internet phenomenon The Guild comes to comics, courtesy of series creator, writer, and star Felicia Day (Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog)! Chronicling the hilarious on- and offline lives of a group of Internet role-playing gamers, the Knights of Good, The Guild has become a cult hit and is the winner of numerous awards from SXSW, YouTube, Yahoo, and the Streamys. Now Day brings the wit and heart of the show to this three-issue miniseries. This storyline fills in details never before revealed on the web show, making it a delightful new chapter for existing fans as well as a perfect jumping-on point for new fans! 32 pages.

Tarran's picks of the week!

I am going to suggest some really good books for people to read. These are all books that I have read and I really enjoyed! Also they are not going to be all fantasy titles either (sigh, I love fantasy) I am going to be good and revel this weeks Tarran's Picks (hmm might need to think of a new name haha)

General Fiction:

At the end of the Great War, two young men find themselves far from home, with everything to gain or everything to lose…
Charismatic womaniser Jack Bryant has the world at his feet, but when trouble catches up with him he's forced to flee Britain for good.
Handsome, honest Ned Sinclair is on a family adventure in Rangoon when he is dealt a bitter blow. With all the odds against him, he risks his life in a desperate bid to escape.
Both men hope to start their lives anew, seeking their fortune in India's fields of gold. Their paths collide in the colourful city of Bangalore, where they form a friendship like no other. In the years that follow, they remain inextricably bound by a dark secret, while their love for the same woman threatens to tear them apart.

The ancient order of the Knights Templar possessed untold wealth and absolute power over kings and popes . . . until the Inquisition, when they were wiped from the face of the earth, their hidden riches lost. But now two forces vying for the treasure have learned that it is not at all what they thought it was-and its true nature could change the modern world. Cotton Malone, one-time top operative for the U.S. Justice Department, is enjoying his quiet new life as an antiquarian book dealer in Copenhagen when an unexpected call to action reawakens his hair-trigger instincts-and plunges him back into the cloak-and-dagger world he thought he'd left behind.

Tamara Goodwin has always got everything she's ever wanted. Born into a family of wealth, she grew up in a mansion with its own private beach, a wardrobe full of designer clothes, a large four poster bed complete with a luxurious bathroom en-suite. She's always lived in the here and now, never giving a second thought to tomorrow. But then suddenly her dad is gone and life for Tamara and her mother changes forever. Left with a mountain of debt, they have no choice but to sell everything they own and move to the country to live with Tamara's Uncle and Aunt.

When a travelling library passes through Kilsaney Demesne, Tamara is intrigued. She needs a distraction. Her eyes rest on a mysterious large leather bound tome locked with a gold clasp and padlock. With some help, Tamara finally manages to open the book. What she discovers within the pages takes her breath away and shakes her world to its core.

Crime:

Elizabeth Peters's unforgettable heroine Amelia Peabody makes her first appearance in this clever mystery. Amelia receives a rather large inheritance and decides to use it for travel. On her way through Rome to Egypt, she meets Evelyn Barton-Forbes, a young woman abandoned by her lover and left with no means of support. Amelia promptly takes Evelyn under her wing, insisting that the young lady accompany her to Egypt, where Amelia plans to indulge her passion for Egyptology. When Evelyn becomes the target of an aborted kidnapping and the focus of a series of suspicious accidents and mysterious visitations, Amelia becomes convinced of a plot to harm her young friend. Like any self-respecting sleuth, Amelia sets out to discover who is behind it all.

Once, Special Agent Smoky Barrett hunted serial killers for the FBI. She was one of the best - until a madman terrorized her family, killed her husband and daughter, and left her face scarred and her soul brutalized. Turning the tables on the killer, Smoky shot him dead - but her life was shattered forever. Now Smoky dreams about picking up her weapon again. She dreams about placing the cold steel between her lips and pulling the trigger one last time. Because for a woman who's lost everything, what is there left to lose?

She's about to find out

Paranormal:

An erotic thrill ride about genetically altered Breeds with feline DNA-and the humans who arouse their lust.

Finally freed from her torment, she's now a Breed Enforcer, in control of her own life. Until she's assigned to protect the one man destined to be her mate- and realizes it's far too easy to lose total control.
Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette. Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire -- and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate. With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

Fantasy:

Slave has been owned by Sondelle, and kept prisoner, since he was a child. Finally escaping through the catacombs, Slave is almost killed by a revenant warrior spirit. He gains his freedom only by swearing fealty to this dangerous creature.
Befriended by Ileki, Slave begins to learn about the world outside. However, in a fight to the death, Slave discovers that the revenant warrior has given him a ′blessing′ - a form of berserk rage that makes him virtually unbeatable in combat, but also makes him lethal to anyone in the immediate area, friends and foes alike. When he is left alone, Slave heads for Ileki′s home city to make amends and seek help. Also heading for the same city are a number of other desperate runaways ...
Meanwhile, an evil pirit imprisoned for centuries beneath a city finds its freedom ... and seeks its revenge.

When a routine hanging goes wrong and a murderer somehow survives the noose, the man announces he is an immortal. And not just any immortal, but Cayal, the Immortal Prince, hero of legend, thought to be only a fictional character, a figure out of the Tide Lord Tarot, the only record left on Amyrantha of the mythical beings whom the part-animal, part-human Crasii believe created their race.
Arkady Desean is an expert on the legends of the Crasii. At the request of her childhood friend, Declan Hawkes, the Kings Spymaster, she is sent interrogate this would be immortal, hoping to prove he is a spy, or at the very least, a madman.
Set the task of proving Cayal a liar, Arkady's own web of lies, and that of her husband and the King's Spymaster will start to unravel. Nothing is really as it seems around Cayal, the Immortal Prince - the lies seem plausible, his stories improbable and truth more than any of them bargained for.

The World Tree rises up out of the seething clouds like a green mountain. All creation nestles in its green branches. There is no world besides this one ... or so the people believe.
Tymon grows up at Argos seminary in the lush heart of the Central Canopy, where science is a heretical pursuit and travel beyond the Tree is banned. But he yearns to break free of these rules and discover new horizons. When he meets a despised Nurian slave in the city baths, his dreams of freedom take on a completely different meaning.
Banished to a drought-ridden colony, Tymon falls in with a group of Nurian rebels and finds himself facing difficult choices. Fighting for freedom and power is not so enticing when it may mean betraying his own people and severing all ties to the world he knows ...

Young Adult:

Twin brother and sister, Lenis and Missy, are slaves aboard the powerful airship the Hiryu - but when the airship is stolen on its maiden voyage, they find themselves working for a captain whose noble quest seems to make no sense. When Lenis dreams of Apsilla, the Blue Dragon of the East, the captain decides to help the twins find Apsilla's daughter. The survival of the last Totem may be their only hope - but will they find Apsilla's egg in time, or will their enemies find them first?

There's a magical and political storm brewing - and Aubrey Fitzwilliam is making sure he's right in the centre of it ...
Aubrey Fitzwilliam is the son of a prominent ex-prime minister. He's also brilliant at magic, but he's stuck at boarding school. At least he has his best friend, George, there to back him up. George would follow Aubrey anywhere - and with Aubrey's talent for thinking up daring schemes that will get them both into trouble, that's no easy thing to do.
At a weekend shooting party at Prince Albert's country estate, the boys find themselves in a hotbed of political intrigue. They discover a golem, a magical creature built to perform one task: to kill Prince Albert. Aubrey and George are hailed as heroes for foiling the attempt on the prince's' life - but who sent the golem, and why? Aubrey is far too curious to let the authorities handle this one, and he and George start investigating ...

Australian Romance Readers Association QLD Flood auction

The Australian Romance Readers Association have posted a blog on a silent auction for the QLD flood victims.

Please have a look and lets see what we can do for QLD!

ARRC2011: silent auction for flood victims

January 15, 2011
by arrawebmaster
As you will be aware there has been another natural disaster in Australia, this time in Queensland with water covering some 75% of the state and indeed areas of other Australian states. In some areas entire townships or suburbs have been completely submerged and residents have lost everything they own.
On Saturday 26 March, in conjunction with the Australian Romance Readers Convention, we are planning to hold a Silent Auction to raise funds for the Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal.
We are putting out the call for items to be included in the Silent Auction to romance authors both in Australia and around the world.

If you would like to donate items for our Silent Auction you can contact me at arra.authors@gmail.com
(Subject line: Silent Auction) for further details. A photo of the item would be greatly appreciated, whether you are sending the item or bringing it to the convention. A special page will set up on our blog for delegates to view the items available ahead of the auction.
In 2009, due to the generosity of romance authors around the world, ARRA raised over $7,500 for victims of the Victorian bushfires. We hope we can match this for the flood victims in Queensland. Anything you can send us would be greatly appreciated.

Ghostwalker #9 Ruthless Game - Christine Feehan

A woman on the run, with more to live for than she imagined, collides with a danger more lethal than she feared in the all-new Ghostwalker scorcher by #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan
Ghostwalker Kane Cannon is pure male—animalistic, sexual, protective, instinctive—and his past missions have prepared him for anything. But his newest assignment, to rescue hostages in Mexico , plunges him into a hot zone he never anticipated: the hiding place of Rose Patterson—fugitive, ex-lover, a fellow Ghostwalker pregnant with his child.
Rose is in flight from the insidious experiments that still live in her dreams, and from the madman who’d do anything to take her child. Of all the Ghostwalkers enlisted to hunt her down, Kane is the only one she can trust. But as their passion reignites, the stakes are raised. Because Kane is now a wanted man as well. And together they’re about to face the most desperate challenge of all: staying together and staying alive.

I love this series of books, each one is the individual story of two paired lovers, but each book opens more of the intergral storyline. I love the action, I love the characters and I think Christine Feehan writing style is fantastic. I read a lot of the military romances like Lora Leigh, Maya Banks, Cherry Adair and many more and sometimes I feel that you could be reading the same book over. Don't get me wrong - I love each author and will be excited to read their books when they come out, it is that time when I switch to another genre.

Christine Feehan is a master at giving you just enough clues to leave you hanging, but not enough to spoil the books. I can not wait to finish Ruthless Games, I am just about half way now!

If you haven't read them, then go out and get it. Now! The first book in the series is Shadow Game. There is action, sex, romance, blood and intrigue. Everything a good novel needs.

But dark clouds are gathering. The word is that local gang lord, Johnny Viaspa, has engaged a hitman known as 'the Finisher' to clean up some 'unfinished business'. Dracula in Love - Karen Essex

Be prepared to be seduced by an erotic and blood-tingling tale. Mina, the most famous woman in vampire lore, vividly recounts the joys and terrors of her passionate affair with the infamous Count. A timeless classic turned inside out, Dracula in Love is a haunting and suspenseful story of eternal love and possession.

Description

Reader, you are about to enter a world that exists simultaneous with your own. But be warned: in its realm, there are no rules, and there is certainly no neat formula to become - or to destroy - one who has risen above the human condition ... the truth is, we must fear monsters less and be warier of our own kind.
From the shadowy banks of the River Thames to the wild and windswept Yorkshire coast, Dracula's beautiful, eternal muse, Mina - the most famous woman in vampire lore - vividly recounts the joys and terrors of a passionate affair that has linked her and Count Dracula through the centuries, and her rebellion against her own frightening preternatural powers. Mina's gothic vampire tale is a visceral journey into Victorian England's dimly lit bedrooms, mist-filled cemeteries and terrifying asylum chambers, revealing the dark secrets and mysteries locked within. Time falls away as she is swept into a mythical voyage far beyond mortal comprehension, where she must finally make the decision she has been avoiding for almost a millennium.
The result is a darkly haunting and rapturous tale of eternal love and possession.
'Dark, gothic, and utterly sensual, Dracula in Love is the novel for Twilight's grownup fans ... in this novel of forbidden desires and secrecy, purity is an overrated virtue.' - Michelle Moran, author of Nefertiti: A novel
'Karen Essex turns the legendary tale of immortal love into a seductive, blood-tingling celebration of the senses; Mina Harker is a heroine for the ages - bold, intrepid, and in love with one of the most dangerous, irresistible men in history. If you read only one more vampire novel, let it be this one!' - C.W. Gorner, author of The Last Queen and The Confessions of Catherine de Medici

Author Interview - Lori Foster

To celebrate the New Year, I have an interview with the great Lori Foster - author of 'Back in Black'

A&R: Can you please explain the premise of your novels!

[Lori said:]
I’m assuming we’re talking about the new series out in May, June, and July, yes? If so: I call this series, “Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor,” because the heroes are men who will do whatever necessary to protect innocents, and especially the women they love.
They are each part of a secret organization that has specialized in breaking up human trafficking rings, rescuing victims, and coordinating efforts. They have far-reaching contacts, immeasurable physical skill, and deadly instincts.
In the process of a mission, each hero in the series finds a heroine who is his perfect partner.
I know the subject matter is heavy, but the romances themselves are typical of my voice – meaning sexy and, I hope, worthy of some smiles.

A&R:Which character was the hardest to write? Which one was the easiest? Are any of your characters based on people you know or purely imaginative?

[Lori said:]
None of my characters are ever based on real people. Occasionally, a tidbit of dialogue, a quirky action, or a physical trait might be borrowed. But the overall person is all imagination.
As to the difficulty, sometimes my life makes writing a little tougher. If there’s a lot going on, if I’m working during the holidays or while a family  member is ill... that can make it tough. But I don’t write characters that are difficult for my muse. If I’m not totally into writing the book and the characters, I don’t write it.

A&R: What led you into a writing career?

[Lori said:]
Great books! I read a few romances that totally bowled me over, and I no sooner became an avid reader than I started writing my own stories. Like many readers, a book would end and I’d want the characters to go on and on. So I tackled my own. At first I wrote strictly for me, but eventually I got the publishing bug.

A&R: What excites you about writing?

[Lori said:]
The creativity! The freedom to have characters take over and lead me on an adventure. And being able to find closure. In real life, we seldom get that. But in fiction... sure. Every emotionally tortured character can wrap up past issues and move on happily.
I also love the interaction with readers. I’ve “met” so many amazing people through the shared love of books. Just as I put myself out there with a book, readers put themselves out there with their emails and letters. I LOVE talking to readers online, getting to know them and making so many new friends – even if they remain cyber friends only.

A&R: What did you do before you became a published author?

[Lori said:]
Hubby and I married early – right out of high school – and lived on a tight budget. No college. So in my early days I was a Kroger grocery clerk, and later I worked on the assembly line at P&G. After I had my sons, I was a stay at home mom who also did lots of extra babysitting and cleaning for other families. Basically, within reason, I did whatever necessary to make extra money. LOL

A&R:Do you listen to music while writing? If so, what artists, genres, or albums do you find the most inspiring?

[Lori said:]
I burn candles and listen to my playlist or ipod while writing. My favorite artist is Kid Rock, but I also enjoy a lot of music from Uncle Kracker, KORN, Marilyn Manson, Aerosmith, Macy Gray, etc...

A&R:What makes you laugh?

[Lori said:]
My grandson! He’s a 5-year old riot. And my sons and hubby. They’re one-liner experts, and they always take me by surprise with the things they’ll say. Animals are also endlessly amusing.

A&R:Who would you most like to be trapped somewhere with?

[Lori said:]
President G.W. Bush. I find him fascinating. I have a million questions I would ask him. Laura could be there too.  I have his book on my “to be read” pile, but there’s nothing like a one on one conversation.

A&R: Do you think that fiction brings something to peoples’ lives?

[Lori said:]
I know that it does. I hear from readers all the time who are going through very difficult periods. Health issues, money issues, family conflicts... They so often tell me that books helped them to get through the emotional and/or physical hardships.
I’ve had characters who suffered rape, and many women wrote me to tell me that I got the emotional turmoil right, as well as the reactions of the loved ones involved. They thanked me for bringing to life their issues. I’ve saved all those letters and emails.
I’ve written characters who lost a loved one, and heard from readers who related – and healed a little through the love stories.
I have been so touched by so many readers that I often get teary-eyed when hearing from them. I’ve been very, very blessed with my reader base.

A&R: What adventures will be next for your characters?

I’m very excited about the new series out in May, June, and July.

My 2011 release schedule looks like this:

Feb: Fantasy (free ebook reissue from Hqn)
March: THE GUY NEXT DOOR (anthology, new)
May: WHEN YOU DARE (single title, NEW)
June: TRACE OF FEVER (single title, NEW)
June: The Promise of Love (benefit book, NEW)
July: SAVOR THE DANGER (single title, NEW)
August: Bad Boys of Summer (anthology, reissue)
November (reissue to be announced)

I’m currently working on the next single title that’ll be part of the new series, but it doesn’t yet have a title, and I don’t know when it’ll be released.
Many thanks!

Lori
