Books - What they mean - By Tarran

Books...

Magical, mysterious and full of wonder.  Books can take you on fantastic journeys through time and space. They can make you feel so good and they can make your skin crawl. The life of a book is renewed every time a reader cracks open a cover. Once upon a time is ingrained on our psyches and prepares us for an epic adventure no matter what genre you are reading.

When you open a book, the first thing you enjoy is the feel of the cover. Some books have a glossy texture, matte or even that leather feel. Your fingers glide over the surface as you eagerly read the blurb of your chosen book. Some covers have generic pictures while other tantalise your mind and leave you wanting.

The next thing you embrace is the pages. Crisp white pages, cream pages, yellow pages. New, cracked and torn. Thick black text, small smudged writing. Some pages are made with thin; nearly see through paper like bibles or thick coarse paper with decorated edges. Comes with plain, gold lined, coloured.

Once you are over the cover and paper, you are then hit with the smell. Breathe in, breath out. Inhaling the words authors have painstakingly wrote, their ideas and love are filling those pages. The smell of a book is a fantastic thing. How to describe the scent of a new book? I’m not sure if you can. It is one of those things that mean different things to different people.  An old book will carry the scents of their owners. The smell of an old book can immediately take you to another time in your history and you can immediately remember where you were and who you were with when you breathe in the smell of an old book.

Now we come to the crux of the book. We come to the place where ideas are turned into other worlds. All fiction is fantasy, whether it is general fiction, romance, horror, crime, paranormal or fantasy. A well written book can entice, tease and tantalise you. It can make you cry, laugh out loud, snort or even throw it in anger. The glee and excitement a book can bring to somebody is awesome to see. The eagerness to get home and read, the I can’t wait feeling to see what your favourite characters have been up too is something you have to experience.

Then once you have finished your adventure you can put it away and re read later, always picking up on things that you missed the first time through. Or you can share the love and give your book to someone else you will appreciate it. All these elements are what makes reading a book a beautiful thing. You cannot replace the weight of a book in your hands, the ink stains on your fingers and contented feeling in your heart.

What Books Make You Tick?

What books make you tick?
How do you find your genre? What is it that draws you to a particular author? Do you get adventurous and try different books?
When I was younger I would only read fantasy and history books (very limited). Working in a bookstore has opened my eyes to many books I would love to read as well as reading books that I can’t stand. Now I love to read my fantasy & history – but also Y/A, conspiracy thrillers and sometimes a bit of chick lit.
One book that I read and loved was ‘Daughter of Smoke and Bone’ by Laini Taylor (which is due in October 2011) that had a wide sweeping story, colourful descriptions and wonderful characters. A fantastic book- one which I can’t wait to be released. Then there are other books like a Lora Leigh I read recently. I love Lora Leigh, but this one just didn’t do it for me. Sometimes it is a bit of hit and miss. My reps come in with a book they rave about and they desperately want you to like it, no they want you to love it. I hate disappointing them when I can’t get into it, but it is great to see their faces light up when you turn out to love it as well.

One book which was a turning point in my life was ‘The Neverending Story’ by Michael Ende. This book changed my life. I got to thinking what if? What if there is a universe for each book that is written and its story is being played out somewhere. A bit farfetched, but it was these questions that opened my eyes for the magic of books. Imagination is the key to a healthy happy existence and books provide that. Sometimes you wonder about the authors who write certain books haha but each novel has its place in the world (even the bad ones)

So my question to you is this.

What books make you tick? How did they change your life and was there a particular one that just did it for you?

Things seen in a bookstore

What type of books are you most interested in seeing in a bookstore?

We have one customer, when we were just starting to get all the paranormal titles in, she was fantastic! She let us know what type of books she was interested in and so we started to get them in for her. Now our paranormal section has gone from one shelf to a whole bay, which sometimes over flows.

Another example is our Manga section as well, we had a few Manga books, but we kept getting asked for them so we stocked up on the ones the customers wanted and now we can take a chance on new titles as well.

This blog post is about as a customer do not be afraid to ask for something to be ordered in! If we don't stock it then please do ask. We really like feedback on what type of books you would like to see in your bookstore!
